Career growth in the age of AI

In the age of AI, I find it hard to know how to approach professional growth, stay relevant, and stand out in the job market. There is always a solution to every problem, and I might have just found some new advice that helps build on the solution.

I already wrote a few blog posts as I keep thinking about the topic. Originally I thought it would be only a few posts, but as I dig deeper, I keep finding more to explore.

Last night I came across a good and short course on Pluralsight. I am not affiliated, but you can look it up there; it’s titled: “Career Growth: Turning Work into Recognition“

I did not think it would influence me as much as it did, or be that relevant to me in the age of AI. I expected a course with general information, and it included most of that, but it also had an interesting take on applying it to my problem.

“How do you stand out when AI can do so much?”
“How do you plan your career growth in the age of AI?”

Notes made

I made some notes after watching the course on the main points I found important.

~ “In the age of AI, human skills are still very important!”
~ “Human judgment is essential. You need to be able to show that you are driving the bus, not the AI”
~ “The most important thing is to be able to show and communicate impact!”
~ “Taking feedback and acting on it is crucial”
~ “Being able to think about the big picture, considering risks and direction, and communicating tradeoffs is an important skill.”

AI can do most of the coding, research, and decision-making for us. What is important is that we decide what is needed and question/judge whether the direction recommended by AI aligns with the overall goal of the business. The decisions we make, and what we ask AI to solve, can drive the business to success or failure. If we can guard the business and communicate well with the team, we will do great in this economy.

Soft skills will become increasingly important. We tend to automate hard skills, making them easily accessible and therefore cheap in the market.
But learning to use the new tools and build something greater with them will never stop being in demand, meaning it will always have high value.

We are still far from what humanity can achieve and what science fiction dreams of. Finding out how to get there, how to make use of the automation we have and the new tools, is something that we will always have to work on and figure out.

If you’ve made it this far, I would like to thank you for reading the article to the end. I wonder what are your thoughts and views on the topic. Please let me know in the comments 🙂

I love programming and architecting code that solves real business problems and gives value for the end-user.
